The sand-heath is found on coastal plains and dunes.This shrub is about 6.6 to 8.2 feet tall and the foliage is aromatic (fragrance of rosemary). The stems are densely multi-branched, with grayish, shreddy bark; the young twigs are covered with a dense coat of gray, short, wooly hairs. The leaves are evergreen, needle-like and arranged in groups of 4 or 6, each leaf appearing as a stiff tubular structure. The plant has both male and female flowers. It grows best in dry, openly vegetated sandhills and river dunes.
